I believe it's possible that they can be similar to us. For example, two arms, two legs, one brain, one heart, etc. But at the same time, they can also be extremely different. It all comes down to how they evolved on their planet. If their planet happens to share a lot of the same characteristics as Earth (such as elements, distance from their sun, time of origin, and more) then I suppose it's possible they could be the same as us. However, if their planet has different elements, is further or closer to their sun, or if they originated long before human life, then they could be completely different.

There are a ton of different beliefs on this subject. I've even heard of people who believe that there is a planet out there that is an exact mirror of Earth except it holds all of our dead. I don't believe that theory at all. In fact, I think it's ridiculous. But it just goes to show that this topic has so many theories, mainly because so little is known about the universe as a whole.

I'd seriously doubt it but no one knows for sure... Obviously we think of aliens being much smarter than us but I doubt that they really are. Scientists are constantly studying the universe, finding new planets (they recently found 27 new ones) and from that they know that the Earth is a very unique planet knowing that it has all the things to keep us alive and I think that there is no other planet that is exactly like Earth that has a sun that can heat it up to the temperature that people like us could live in...but there is numerous galaxies, planets, etc. etc. out there and that most likely have the needs to have living creatures on it. So, the answer would be no, they wouldn't be the same as us but the odds are that there are aliens out there maybe.

Most scientists, like Neil Degrasse Tyson, like to deride sci-fi shows like Star Trek because the aliens are all basically human; two arms, two legs, two eyes, etc. Tyson claims that life from another planet would look nothing at all like life on Earth.

I disagree. Here's why. If an intelligent species on another planet invents a wheel, what shape will their wheel have? Probably circular, right? That's because a round wheel works, other shapes don't. Basically what natural selection does is refine the mechanisms of life. Mechanism that work get passed on, those that fail are forgotten.

Tyson points out that most animals on Earth have two eyes and one mouth because they evolved from a common two eyed one-mouthed ancestors. He's right, but he seems to be assuming that was pure chance. Stereo vision works; would three eyes be any better? Would two mouths be an advantage? Probably not.

It's true there's a huge variety of life on this planet, but at the same time there are types of life we never see. How many three-legged animals are there? How about five-legged? None, because even numbers of legs work, odd numbers don't. There reason we evolved from an ancestor with an even number of legs is because those.

On another planet, there will be conditions that will make life different, sure: temperature, gravity, atmospheric pressure, etc. But the basic laws of physics will be the same, so many of the same mechanism we see in lifeforms here we'd see repeated there: eyes, mouths, legs, and so on. Life out there would not be completely alien unless somehow the laws of physics there we likewise alien.

And if the planet in question is at all similar to Earth, I find it not just possible, but likely even, that some species there will resemble humans beings. (Cosmetic differences aside; skin pigment, number of fingers, horns, etc.)

But that's just me.

It might be possible, but not very probable. I doubt that we evolved at the same pace, or within the same time frame, as beings on other planets. And, just as God (or Nature, or the 'big bang theory', or an 'intelligent designer') created a broad variety of species on Earth, it's plausible that He also created different species on different planets with different atmospheres and environments. -RKO- 06/23/07

Only if they engineered us to be here thousands of years ago. That would mean we are the aliens. The other reason would be they are us from the future. Other then that there would not look like us. We are a byproduct of an evolutionary combination that worked. Declaring that we are alone in the universe is a true testament to us own vanity.

Of course it's possible they could be like us but there are a lot of factors to take into consideration. To make a long answer short:
Their home planet would have to be exactly like ours or they would evolve differently in order to survive the conditions of their atmosphere and environment.

I don't know if they are the same as us, but it would be awfully arrogant of us to assume that God could not create a planet like ours in another galaxy, with more intelligent beings to populate it. I for one do not want to question Him. I would like to think that they do exist and they are a lot like us.

I think its possible, yes. because there might be a civilization that is evolving in the same tactics we are. its always possible! it could also be a civilization that has evolved past our state of being. or before us in evolution. It just depends on the climate and placement of the planet and star it orbits. but in general, i suppose its possible, yes.

For all that we know, the White House in Washington might be run by aliens now. We don't know what they look like and what their intelligence is. Who knows whether or not one or more of them are presidential advisors?

Yes they can.. They can even be us from the future... Those statements contain a big CAN though; too many mysteries just not worth mentioning and to those that laugh at this matter can be or will be considered childish.
