Thank goodness the Republicans stopped them.
They passed a similar bill before so that oil company's would be forced to contribute to new energy alternatives.
Results ended up being that the oil companies passed the cost down to the consumers.
Do the Democrats have no clue how business works?

Right everyone pays between .42 in tax (federal + state)
The cost to refine one gallon of gas is .48.
If you add in the cost to import, and to transport. That is why the price is high.
Granted the oil companies are making huge profits, but the majority of it has to do with supply and demand.

it's not just gas. If they had their way, they would tax the air we breath and then tax us to exhale.

You are tossing out an argument used, and not proved by the Republicans. There is no data to justify such a claim!
They weren't putting a new tax on Oil companies, they were taking away subsidies THAT WE ALREADY PAY THE OIL COMPANIES!
Americans will believe anything, hook, line and sinker!
Try using your mind rather than the scare tactics by a few!
I know exactly how business works, and in this case, does not! I don't think you have a clue personally!
Oil companies have the biggest profits of any corporation, thanks in large part of the subsidies they receive. Why I will never know. You think they want to look for alternative energy on their own? They are also the lowest taxed anything in this country. What is it, between 4 and 8%. Where can I get that deal!
I don't know about you, but with all their profits, I haven't seen the oil prices go down while they rake in record profits. And the bad thing is, it effects everyone from the consumer buying plastics to states that depend on tourism! You think they oil pumps is the only place you are getting screwed?
Oil companies buy up patents for alternative energy so they will never see the light of day!

In Ca. the Democrat Legislature forced us to have to vote on an extension on a half cent sales tax which gives us a sales tax of 71/2%. The reason is because they spent the fuel tax money on special interest projects that should have gone for road repair and building new highways. We have the highest fuel taxes in the nation. The freeway in my community is one of two in the Nation that are listed by D.O.T as the most crowded. Here's another for you and I'm sure I will get the thumbs down, no matter it does not make it any the less true. Every time Social Security was raided by Congress, it was a Democrat Congress.

Actually, I'm a conservative, and I'm not totally against a gas tax.
It is imperative, for our own national security and economic security, that we ween ourselves off of foreign, especially mid-east oil.
We can do that by regulating the auto and energyindustries up the whazoo, or we can impose a tax and let the market respond to that. By making gasoline more expensive, we may encourage the public to buy more efficient vehicles, or the development of alternative fuels.
Yes, this would be tough on the people now, but I believe it would save them a lot of anguish down the road, as the gas situation only gets worse.

see it from both sides. if there was a bigger tax, then the consumers would not want to drive as much. hence more public transportation and less global warming. oil companies got rich enough from the iraq war. and isnt it just funny how the president and cheney just happen to be big on oil companies?

guh.... why do Republicans want the middle class to pay more taxes than oil companies?
you cut their taxes to zero at a time of record profit... anyone in the middle class pay zero tax?
yet, if you say anything about ACTUALLY MAKING THEM PAY SOME TAX... you "know nothing about business"...
nice excuse to cover for your buddies isn't it?
I'm sure they couldn't find a way to pay the tax out of the RECORD ALL TIME PROFIT... but "that's not the way business works" is it... and Republicans love it...
but back to you insult... why do Republicans seem to only possess the very most RUDIMENTARY understanding (that's usually very skewed by Rush) of business and then feel the need to insult others?
listening to Rush isn't a master's degree in economics... and there's nothing in this question that really illustrates to me that you really know ANYTHING about business... just the UBER CLICHE Republican lines... any real understanding there?

No, Democrats are clueless.
It's amazing how little they know.
Since Democrats either work for Government, or are on Welfare, they Hate Companies, who are our Employers.
They want to Hurt them.
Democrats just don't understand that extra taxes & costs when they persecute Companies are just passed on to the customer.

I'm willing to pay more for gas if it contributes to new energy. If you're too afraid of change that's your problem.

No, the real question is "Who here knows that higher gas prices are Bush's fault, because he destabilized the middle east, sending the prices skyrocketing?"
You have no clue.
