My daughter's social security card came in the mail (I think about 3 weeks after she was born). I had to go down to the vital statistics office to get her birth certificate.

When my baby was born they sent me her SS card about 4-6 weeks later in the mail. For her birth certificate, I had to go to my local Heath Department and go to the Vital Statistics office. The gave me certified COPIES of her birth certificate. It you want the REAL oneyou have to contact the state office for it. The Health Department told me that the certified copies list only enough info (Name, birthdate, parents names, ect) so that the schools and other places you need to show will be satisfied.

With my first, I thought they would be sending me the birth certificate, but it turns out you have to go pay for one. At the hospital, they should've given you a form for the social security card - that will come in the mail. (it could take a few more weeks)

I had to send in an application with $12 I think to the courthouse in Madison with a self addressed stamped envelope to get my sons. This is in Wisconsin it may be different in your state. I searched in yahoo for wisconsin birth certificate and found all of the information needed. You should try for your state.

I had to go to the County Clerk's office at the county court house (the county of child's birth). It wasn't ready until he was 6 week old though.

The social security card was ordered for me by the hospital... BUT, if your childs wasn't you will need to apply for one through the social security administration. Ask your pediatrician for the application (or where to get one).

I'm in Michigan
