That tree is definately a Jacaranda (the J is pronounced as an H, since it is of Hispanic origin [actually, the botanical name for the Plant Kingdom are technically Latin names]) The trees are green in foilage during the year, except the warmer summer months when the green turns to a beautiful violet canopy for about 3 months..........Living in SoCal all my life, I've seen them all the time.....they are beautiful, but a real mess if planted over pavement......

i kinda agree with the lady above but after further comparison i believe it is a Jacaranda Bhutan not a Jacaranda mimosifolia. The Mimosifolia has to much green and the flowers seem to be a bit bigger... so therefore I believe it is the Bhutan.

I really have no idea, but I love how pretty it is. I did find a site that may be helpful to you though, if you'd like to take a look through some of these trees on this site, you may find the answer to your question. Glad I could be of some help to you. Good luck.

Jacaranda. Grows everywhere in SoCal. I think it is native to Australia and New Zealand.
