So I am moving to the basement of this house and its like an apartment with room, bathroom, my own door, etc. Only, I am scared b/c Im going in there with my 5months twins and the basement has practically been a storage for a lot of junk! I am scared that it might be too dirty since it hasn't been cleaned in years and who knows what's down there!?

I wanted to see if anyone knows of I think its a machine or something that I get to check if everything is good in the air (a friend told me about this) something to check to see if its good to live down there. She's just heard of it also and doesn't know if there is an actual thing. Anyone know. Please Help. Thanks.

Check the yellow pages for local air-quality testing outfits. Some goverments do this. They'll check for toxic molds, fumes from off-gassing paints and such, and radon (a natural but dangerous radioactive gas).

You'll also want to check for lead paint contamination.

Oh, and if you do move in buy at least one carbon-monoxide detector and a smoke/fire alarm for each room. And change the batteries regularly. Good investment in health and safety.

I am guessing that you are doing this to save money. You may lose more than you gain. Your comment about "you don't know whats down there" bothers me. If it has been storage only, you may find some very unhealthy conditions. Is it worth the chance for your babies? In the States, basements must have a certain size egress window in case of fire.

First, clean the basement from top to bottom. Shampoo all the carpeted areas and wipe all the walls down. Buy an air purifier. You should be safe. Also make sure you have a CO2 detector in you home as well.

Is this in the US? I don't know about a machine that checks for air quality. Are there any windows? If there are no windows, then I believe this is illegal in the US.

Is this a legal apartment? If not, I would look elsewhere if I were you.
