Check out Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline album and some of his earlier material--he was a huge influence on the Steeler's Wheel. Lightfoot has other amazing material--all of it much better than his huge and dreadful hit, The Edmund Fitzgerald. Also check out the band Dire Straits.

I love "Stuck in the Middle", it's Mr.Blonde's song in Reservoir Dogs. Other great 70s songs are "Little Green Bag" by George Bakker Selection (theme song from Reservoir Dogs) and the instrumental surf-rock "Misirlou" by Dick dale and the Del Tones (Pulp Fiction theme). For the best 70s songs, check out Tarantino soundtracks.

Since you mentioned Gordon Lightfoot..... " Canadian Railroad Trilogy" is one of his best ever.
Jerry Jeff Walker... "Mr. Bojangles".... "Drifting Way of Life"
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.... Anything off the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album.... The short hairs and long hairs got together for a monumental recording session !!!!
Kris Kristofferson.... "The Silver Tongued Devil and I "..."Why Me Lord"... "Me and Bobby McGee".
