The only explanation I can think of is that the smaller one was attached to the larger one when it was captured and climbed off at some point afterward.
Caterpillars are immature (larval) butterflies or moths and are incapable of reproducing.

Caterpillars don't lay eggs OR have babies. Caterpillars spin a cocoon or chrysalis, then they turn into moths/butterflies. The moth or butterfly lays eggs, which turn into caterpillars.
Your miniature "replica" can only have hatched from another egg hidden somewhere in the bottle with your first caterpillar. This is easy, because most moth and butterfly eggs are typically hidden, usually on the undersides of leaves where other insects won't be likely to find and eat them. So if you gave your caterpillar some leaves to eat, there was probably another egg on one of those leaves. That egg hatched into what is most likely a brother or sister of your original caterpillar.
The Sources field has a great writeup of the life cycle of the butterfly (the moth follows the same cycle of egg, caterpillar, cocoon, and adult). The illustration makes it very clear.
Also in the Sources field is a page about raising woolly bear caterpillars; the most common woolly bear caterpillars are the larval form of the Tiger Moth, and that page has links to other Web sites where you can learn more about other caterpillars similar to the woolly bear, such as your all-black version, very possibly the caterpillar of a leopard moth:

I read some of the answers to your question. It seems that we all have different answers. I saw, 2 days ago, a black wooly caterpillar (that had been in the same spot on my porch for a day and a half) suddenly start to form white puffy, cotton candy like stuff on the majority of the body. About 2 hrs later, what looked like small maggots, coming outward from the body in between all the stingers (all over it, in the white stuff) as I looked closely I could see that they had tiny little legs so I knew they were smaller caterpillars. Another hour later, they had all cocooned themselves separately still in the "cotton candy stuff" and the mother crawled out leaving the sac with the babies behind. It was fascinating to watch and I was pleased that both of my daughters were with me to witness this. So....about the eggs and moths and eggs, I just don't know- I saw something totally different happen.

No, moths and butterflies lays eggs, not caterpillars. You might have picked up some unseen eggs along with that caterpillar or it was in the foliage that you put in the cage or jar with the caterpillar. You have the same types of caterpillars, so they gradually grow until they are ready to pupate.

It's possible to spend lots of time and money trying to find methods to train your kids how to learn and enhance their examining skills. Is difficult to instruct a small child how to see, and even engaging them to read is challenging in itself. Nonetheless it doesn't have to be like that because you got assistance from the program https://tr.im/5EQsL , Children Learning Reading program.
With Children Learning Reading you will teach your son or daughter how to split up looks and break phrases into phonemes, an important issue when your kid is merely understanding how to spell.
The studying system from Children Learning Reading program allows you for children to read quickly and properly, from simple phrases to phrases till they understand to read stories.
