I completely agree....but people get REALLY defensive here if you say anything.
God help these poor children when they get to school! The worst I ever saw on here was a guy who named his son "Righteous"..
I once asked (as a joke) if I should name my twins Placenta Previa and Vas Deferens.......and a bunch of people LIKED that!!!

I totally agree! Someone recently told me that they considered fruit names like Kiwi, Melon, and Mango. Why name a human being after a fruit?
A friend knows someone who named her child (a girl), Kermit. Yeah, uh-huh....
I don't like crazy celebrity names either like Rumour, Apple, etc. Naming a child is a responsibility and it should be treated as such. People need to think about how they would feel being saddled with a ridiculous name or a far out spelling.
When people want to name their child for a political cause, diet preference, activist reasons, for attention, etc., they are not naming a child but feeding into their own agenda and ego. The name is not about us, the parents - it is about the child(ren). Give them a name people can respect and not lead to teasing and confusion.
If a person wants to be different, you can find ways to be different without calling your child Moon Unit. Same with spellings. If you want it a bit different, alter it slightly with an ie instead of a y or something simple. Our son's middle name is Gregorie instead of Gregory since it was closer to his great-grandfather's Ukrainian name of Grigorij. There has been no confusion about it.
I've heard so many bad names that I don't know if I could even pick one. Look around this "Baby Names" thread and you can find quite a few, though I doubt some of them are real - just people trying to get attention. ;)

I've contomplated this in many areas. movies, music and art to name a few. look at nasa we are going back to the moon! people are not as creatiave any more every one want's to be unique but not put forth the effort. walk around the local toy store, the educational things like Legos and model cars have been replaced with video games and kids cell phones. unfourtinately all these great advances in tecnology and overprotecting kids result in adults that would reather play with a computer than actually interact with others, use their brains for creativity. I'd be suprised if a few generations from now could survive if we ever had something happen to where we had no electricity!
also my freinds wife is one of these people that comes up with a fruty name that ends up being a combination of a car and a food!

Everyone just has to be "unique" and in their being unique they forget their CHILD has to grow up and live their lives with the name they choose. In a lot of cases it seems more selfish than unique.
Somehow foresight isn't used when naming a child. I understand that as time changes, so do names. However, there is a point of ridiculous and parents seem to want to cross it. I should have been a lawyer so I could help children like Fifi-Tixabelle and Moxie Crimefighter sue the pants off of their parents for future psych office visits.

I really think some people are losing their minds to be naming their children some of the weird, crazy names they come up with, just for the sake of being different. Like that couple naming their kid Metallica. I think that's the worst name I've ever heard! Just because the dad loves the band. How fricking dumb! What happens when another band comes along that tops Metallica for this guy, does he have to change his kid's name then? I don't think some people are showing the respect and care that they should to their children who get stuck with some of these weird monikers!

There are some countries where the registrar has the power to refuse to register outlandish names. Despite being generally libertarian, I thoroughly approve of this.
I think it is unkind to give a child a peculiar name or to go to great effort to use an unusual spelling or use a name that is difficult to pronounce or one that does not accurately suggest the sex of the bearer.
If someone would start a campaign for sensible naming of children, I would sign up!

I am sure there are a lot of us here on answers that feel the same way you do. I am forever suggesting to these new parents that what they feel is a unique and cute name may someday come back to bite their child on the butt.
I think some on here just say they are going to name their imaginary babies these awful names just to get a rise out of others and/or points for themselves! I think it's a contest at times.
Then again some egotistical folks name their children wild and wolly names to call attention to themselves. It works in my book! They make themselves look stupid and illiterate.

People are looking for attention. I think that if these weird names keep being used, we'll notice a lot of name changes in the future. Whatever happened to normal names?
