Four movies, all inspired by one war, come immediately to mind.
The first two were produced while that war waged. Casablanca, and Mrs. Miniver, both appeared in theatres in 1942.
The Bridge over the River Kwai (1957) was the product of some years of hindsight, and any war looks different in a rear view mirror.
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), a brilliant look at that crucial battle from the Japanese side of the lines, is a worthy successor to the older movies.

Here are my favorites:
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Francis Ford Coppola has constructed the definitive Vietnam movie even though Apocalypse Now isn't just about the war. Coppola's film explores the dark regions of the heart and soul in a well-conceived metaphorical rendition of Conrad's novel that we see through Captain Willard's as he pursues Kurtz and to terminate his command with extreme prejudice!
There are so many memorable scenes here skiing on the river, surfing in the midst of chaotic shelling, the massacre in the boat, the bridge scene at night, the Wagnerian operatic huey attack on the village, and others. Who will ever forget Robert Duvall's statement, I love the smell of napalm in the morning . . . Smelled like. . . victory.
Das Boot (1981)
From within the claustrophobic setting of a German U-boat, Wolfgang Peterson's film ranks as one of the most powerful statements against war ever created. By its very nature the film serves as a bridge builder for Americans who see it, for you will see that these German soldiers are human beings who simply want to survive and get on with their lives. It contains incredible suspense and tension, and you will be rooting for the Germans this time (no matter which side of WWII you were on) because the film rises above its circumstances to become an eloquent treatise on the very nature of humanity.

STARRING: John Ridgely, John Garfield, Harry Carey, Gig Young, Arthur Kennedy, Charles Drake, George Tobias
DIRECTOR: Howard Hawks
STUDIO: Warner Bros.
RATING: NR
GENRE: Action / Drama / War
RELEASE DATE: February 4, 1943
OSCAR WINNER: Won 1 Oscar in 1944
Schindler's List - A portrayal of the most depressing part of World War II. Steven Spielberg earned his first Oscar with this amazingly horrid yet touching film which mainly retells the story of Jewish prison camp interns during World War II. This movie was done entirely in black and white which really makes it seem more authentic. The message is powerful and very moving.
