It would be helpful to first put as an improper fraction:
3 1/2 = 7/2
7/2 x 7/2 = 49/4 = 12 1/4
8 1/2 = 17/2
17/2 x 17/2 = 289/4 = 72 1/4

First, get yourself a common base. In this case the base is two.
Multiply the two by the full unit (number), and add the value above the two.
Do this for both fractions.
Multiply both fraction together, the top numbers are multiply together, and the bottom numbers are multiplied together.
Divide by the base.
3½ x 3½ =
(6 + 1)/ 2 x (6 + 1)/2 =
7/2 x 7/2 =
49/ 4 = 12 ¼
8½ x 8½ =
(16 + 1)/ 2 x (16 + 1)/ 2 =
17/ 2 x 17/ 2 =
289 / 4 = 72¼

The easiest way to multiply mixed fractions is to turn them into simple fractions first. You do this by multiplying the whole number integer by the denominator and adding it to the numerator. Thus, 3 1/2 becomes: (3 x 2) + 1, or 7. You then have 7/2. Once both numbers are turned into simple fractions, you simply multiply straight across. Thus, 7 x 7 = 49, is the number that goes on top; 2 x 2 = 4, is the number that goes on the bottom. So, your answer would be 49/4. You then divide the numerator by the denominator to get a whole number plus a remainder. The whole number goes in front and the remainder stays as the numerator. Thus, 49/4 = 12 with a remainder of 1, so the answer would be 12 1/4. The second problem would be 17/2 x 17/2, or 289/4=72 with a remainder of 1, or 72 1/4.

3 1/2 is the same as 3.5, so you could just do 3.5 x 3.5
or, how to multiply fractions:
3 1/2 x 3 1/2:
multiply the whole numbers (3)
multiply the numerators (1)
multiply the denominators (2)
So 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 = 9 1/4
and 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 = 64 1/4
=] Hope that helped!

Convert 3 1/2 to 7/2. Multiply, and you end up with 49/4, which is 12 1/4.
Convert 8 1/2 to 17/2. Multiply and you end up with 289/4, which is 72 1/4.

Make it an improper fraction.
The top will be bigger than the bottom but in your answer the top cannot be bigger than the bottom.
3 1/2 x3 /12=
To make it an improper fraction, you multiply 2 and 3 together =6 now add 1 the top number to 6.
The bottom number always remain the same.
7/2 x7/2=49/4 Multiply out both top and bottom for the answer.
49/4 to make this fraction proper , you divide 49 by 4. It's 12 and 1/4

if the expression is x 1/2 * x 1/2 ... to n times then it is equals
[(2 x + 1)/2]^n
[(2*3+1)/2]^2 = 49/4
[(2*8 +1)/2]^2= 289/4

Convert the fractions to decimals and then multiply. For example the first number 3 1/2 would be 3.5. In a fraction you divide the top number by the bottom number ( or in this case since they are side by side, the first number by the second number). In this firest example it would be
3.5 x 3.5

It's 3x4 plus a quarter and the other 8x9+ a quarter. It works for n+1/2 x n+1/2 for any n and you get n(n+1) + 1/4.
