Last Oct I came off the pill after 9yrs, ready to start a family with my husband. My periods were odd for a month or so & then they settled & became very regular.
In May my husband & I went away with a big group of friends for 4 days. My period was due on the Fri we were going away & I would have therefore been on for the full four day trip. I couldn't face it, knowing that it would bring a breakout of spots & weight gain & stomach cramps. So as a quick fix (I know this was wrong) I started taking the pill again a week before I went away. Once we got home I stopped taking it. A week later my period began. It continued for 3 weeks! I thought because I had messed my body around it would do this but would then sort itself. A week & a half later I started another period. I am still on that period. Most days there is just a yukky brown discharge but then now & again there will be some heavy blood loss.

I don't want to go to a doctor because I know it's self inflicted but I am worried I have messed up my body beyond repair!
Has anyone made the same mistake as I have?
Can anyone help?

Please don't anyone send any insulting replies, I have been stupid, I know I have, I don't need to be told that. :(

Thanks in advance to those of you who take the time to answer... xx

I think the mistake you made is not starting the pill on the first day of your period. By taking it a week before you left you interfered with your cycle, so I imagine it's just your body coming back to normal and expelling the hormones you put in. It is unusual for such a long period though. For your own health I would say to go to the doc if things aren't back to normal in a couple of weeks. You are trying to conceive and want to be healthy. Your doctor won't judge you, and don't feel like you did anything stupid. It will give you and your husband peace of mind if you know it's something that'll pass quickly.
Good luck with it, and I hope you are holding a beautiful baby in your arms soon.

may be time to ask about a D&C with the Dr. I did the same as you and had the same results. It settled down eventually to a normal pattern. Then again and again, Dr said it was ok to go on and off especially as I was travelling long haul to Australia. So don't worry too much it may mean you have an extra thick build up of lining of the womb that needs a little help being removed. Things will settle back down then. I had a friend who's periods were always as you described.....almost nothing to note..but a brown trickle...and sometimes a black tar like stuff........and she had children just fine!!

Hi,
I really would go to the doctor!
If there is brownish discharge, it sounds more like an infection to me....
It could be something and nothing, and I wouldn't worry too much about being recriminated by the doctor. If you had gone to the doctor to stop the period, they would have given you something very similar to the pill... Doctors often do if you are going on holiday or something...

Good luck

I don't think you have anything to worry about, just try to give you body more time to re adjust. I did the same thing when i tried to get the depo shot, it is supposed to last for three months then its time to get another one, well for those three months I bleed of and on like what you described for the whole three months. I went to the doctor and they could not do anything to stop it, but they tried to give me more birth control to get it back regular they said, I turned them down and it just got back on track shortly after on its own. That was years ago. Recently I decided to try BC again and tried the seasonique pill after i stopped taking it I went through the same thing again only this time it was for about a week. I know it can be crazy but it will stop.

you havent messed up your body, so dont threat. your period will be irregular as you have stopped and started the pill. this is your body trying to adjust. as you still have some of the hormones from the pill in your system. either way you should go to the doctors. if it is heavy they will give you tranexamic acid, if not then you will just have to wait it out if it is light. but its better to be safe than sorry. i did that wen i went to cancun in march for spring break. just go to the doctors. im still at med school so im not qualified to give u in depth info, neither is anyone here. so please go to the doctors. stay safe.

This is definately not normal. I have messed about with the pill a lot, am really crap at taking it regularly, and it has definately happened to me. Go see your doctor, ok what you did was a bit silly, but you're better off getting it sorted now, no reasonable doctor is going to be cross with you for making a mistake.

thats ok what you did a doctor will tell you the same.my gp told me to do it cos i would have had a period on wedding day.dont panic.just get back to normal with pill.maybe use a condom till your straight again.you can still have kids.i have 3 we started trying for out first n got caught first month we tried so you havent done any permanent damage and its totally acceptable by medical proffession so you can see your doctor if you are worried.

I would just go to the doctors. I'm sure they know girls do this all the time. Don't be embarrassed about it. They have heard everything and anything you can think about. So just go and see what they say. I bet you will feel a lot better when you do.
