Yes, you need a crossover cable, which is designed to go directly between two PCs without any equipment in the middle. It also works for two Xboxes.
If you need to connect more than two machines, then you need a switch (most routers have a built-in switch) and regular non-crossover cables.

the crossover almost by no potential works. thats from a uni garduate whos been doin networking and it for 10 years. you will get 2 ethernet cables (approximately £2 each and each) and a 4 port change for greater or less £8. it greater convenient and greater reliable.

yes. you need a cross over cable or easier still. Just purchase a 8 port switch and a couble of patch cables.
