It was basically a rip off of "Alien" It took place in some kind of research facility on a planet with a thin atmosphere. Between about 1979 and 1986.

The story goes something like this:
Professor mutates some alien tissue. Alien grows and manages to "infect" some of the people who's tissues start to breakdown into some sort of basic protein. Only the victims don't die the just sort of become gelatinous blobs that divide like primitive cells. It turns out that the basic gelatinous protein blobs are alien food.

The professor(who smokes too much) is discussing things with a big robot with the voice of a little boy. The robot says something about the professor's cancer. The professor asks "How did you know about that?" and the robot replys "I've seen it before, sir." The professor, apparently a very private man, turns off the robot.

At the end the professor has the hero literally rip the tumor from his liver and feed it to the alien which kills it. The alien not the cancer.

...sounds vaguely like the 1982 Roger Corman-produced "Alien" rip-off, entitled "Forbidden World".

...maybe even the 1985 sci-fi shocker, "Titan Fiend" (aka "Creature").

...check out the attached webpages; your description sounds somewhat like them!!!

This is weird and wonderful...cannot remember the title, but I think it stars Klaus Kinski..the weirdo of a dozen films..I forget..you will have to look it up..He was in "Aguirre:Wrath of God" as well as many others..if it's him, stay away, very strange critter...father of Natasha Kinski..sworn enemy of his best friend and director of most of his movies.....
