Please ignore all the other blather posted in response to your inquiry. The real reason you haven't seen Tony the Tiger in commercials as often as you have lies with a pending lawsuit filed by parents and consumer advocacy groups under a Massachusetts law that prohibits companies from marketing "junk food" to children (dadforfive almost had it right). We'll see Tony again, we may not see him as much as we used to in the past, though.

I don't know about the cartoon character itself, but Tony was only ever voiced (to the best of my knowledge) by the late, great Thurl Ravenscroft, who was also a famous voice in Disney's Haunted Mansion (the baritone bust in the graveyard scene singing Grim Grinning Ghosts) and as the lead Baritone singer with The Mello Men. Thurl died May 22, 2005. He was the man who said, "They're GRRRRRREAT!!" He's also famous for his song, "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch."

I guess he got fired for eating too many corn flakes. Or he could have turned into one, a flake.
Needless to say, I'm joking. The reality is that commercials of that type were aimed directly at children. That peed a lot of people off so now he just rides around on a race car, on the hood. It costs Kellogg's a lot of money to sponsor NASCAR.
It attracts a larger audience for less money.
That's my take.

Shot by big game hunters while, paradoxically, HE was on safari

Dark rumors abound about drug debts and his controversial relationship with a prominent lioness (heiress to the MGM lion)

His life took a downward spiral after he became involved in extreme sports a few years ago following a bout of depression brought on by public mockery of his slight speech impediment (the problem he had with the 'gr' sound) finally culminating when Bisto sacked him from a voiceover for them as he couldn't get his tongue around 'gravy granules'
