I've heard that too, and its supposedly because the father plays a huge male influence in a women's life. Not everyone, I can assure you wants to marry someone like there dad. Like think about women who grew up with alcoholic fathers or violent fathers who beat them? Who would want that?

I dont go after someone like my father, as a matter of fact I try to find someone the opposite of my father considering he was a smoker and alcoholic that couldnt care less about his family. But maybe some women have had good men as dads and like those qualities in a man.

Hi Ester,
I think that's sort of a myth. Sigmund Freud came up with that theory, because he believed daughters had penis envy for their fathers (it is more elaborate than this). While Sigmund Freud was a famous theorist, it is being found that a lot of his stuff had no basis at all and is untrue.
The truth of the matter is that girls will generally date someone that has a identical face to their own. If you took a girl and made her face into a guy with all the features, that's what she would want.

perhaps its because the father is supposed to be a protector, someone who makes you feel safe, especially when you were little, and maybe you want to feel like that again, so an older man may be the answer. It may be because older men take more care of you, and that they have had a bit of life, and are more experienced in all departments.

I wish I had! Dad was a good kind, gentle person. But I had to have a Cowboy! Not the horse-riding kind, but the adventurous kind! He was a good person--went through the service; UC Berkeley in Forestry, but was brought down by the genetic disease of paranoid schizophrenia. At 34, he was a street person. A horrible disease!

I think when they say they want someone like their father they want someone who can love, protect and take care of them like how a father is supposed to. And if their father protrays the the qualities of a good man that handles his business thats basically what they want a good man who can handle his business. Just so happens their father might b a perfect example.

i think women do tend to do that because their father lets say hes a perfect gentlemen, ladies first etc....when their daughters see that their fathers are so nice and kind...then they would want to marry someone just like him....well on the other hand...if your father is an abusive person..then of course you want to marry someone the total opposite of your father...

Behavioral patterns are often passed on genetically. As their mothers were attracted to men like their fathers, so too are their daughters.

I still think they deserve to be treated nicely and politely especially when you're her boyfriend or husband.
