According to if you want to be a free safety or a strong safety.
A free safety would be like a cornerback with more power. So you'd need to work on speed and agility. Run through cones, tires, and ropes. Playing FS is like being a centerfielder. You have to have a quick reaction time and have a feel for where the ball is going. The only way you can work on that is play football, or even play practice games and try to "feel" where the ball is going.
A strong safety would be like a linebacker with a little less power. Work on some agility and some speed, but not as much as a free safety. Get stronger so you can knock the crap out of offensive players.

I think that he may be a little to small for strong safety, although his sounds like a good athlete , strong safety is designed to be another linebacker that is fast enough to cover and big enough to fill the run, if your son likes to hit then this is a excellent position for him, but he may have problems in coverage with taller recievers. As for the running back position he is the perfect build, low center of gravity and good speed, best of luck with the season.

playing safety you have to be strong and quick, and be able to read the qb. work alot on dropping back and then moving forward to tackle practice angle runs. Hopefully the linebackers will clog up the line and full back so all you have is a WR to deal with and maybe a TE. Work hard and don't be scared.

Speed will be the thing you need to work on the most. If you can't keep up with the WR then you wont play.
