My best friend and I are roommates in a dorm this fall. I'll probably have a laptop and he'll get a desktop. I'm going to get a wireless router so I don't have to deal with cords. What you guys recommend so that both of us using the router won't slow us down? Thx

Should I wait and see if I can steal wireless from other people in the dorm?

The most common two are linksys and dlink... most resellers carry them.

If your really want better range, better connectivity, better firewall, much better system go Buffalo http://buffalotech.com

Not as well known but really good routers they even have a model with VPN end point built in and nice linux OS.

If you are not big gamers, almost any wireless router will work fine. If you will push it to the limits with games, get something like a Netgear Rangemax N for speed (it will cost more than a regular router).

For best compatibility, many router manufacturers' wireless adapters work best with their own lines of routers. But most can work interchangeably.

Don't hook off other peoples' connections. It may be illegal and it slows down the network for everyone. It also exposes you to the risk that someone else will access your computers.

To keep people from doing that leeching off your router thing to you, you need to be sure to password your router and use encryption. Most routers offer WEP, WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK (the strongest protection).

Linksys are the most stable prolly just a simple WRT54G wireless router. Or if you guys are college students and into computers and linux I'd get the WRT54GL router, it has open source firmware.

TODAY? Run to Staples and buy a LinkSys USB Wireless .
router
If the router is located close to your desk, use the WIRE. Wireless is more trouble.

But if you want to save a BUCK, then try http://www.newegg.com
