Nobody is born that way, but there are things that can start from there childhood that influence how there going to act. It is possible to be ridiculously apathetic, but most people aren't like that.
Then there are these people who are hurt too easily so to combat it, they build these giant walls and shut people out, thinking that if they care less about everyone it will serve them better.

People with anti-social personality disorder often do not express the emotion of love and often use friendship for their own gain. They don't understand the concepts that govern the majority of society and don't honestly comprehend emotions. They are something they can use and abuse in others if they know a bit of psychology. A part of their brain is damaged or inactive so they don't function the same way as the 'norm'. Add in learned behaviours since childhood and you have a anti-social person.
Psychopaths and sociopaths are similar in behaviour and ability or one might say inability to love.
For the most part people do feel emotions. The extent in which they feel love or friendship depends on how their mind works and how their behaviours and personality have been conditioned over the years. In other words, it depends on the genetic predisposition and a whole lot of variables, such as past experiences, personality type, environmental factors and many more conditions.

I think it's a defense mechanism. Why? Because I can be a little bit like this at times.
Feelings are wonderful. They let us experience the best things in life...love, happyness, etc. They also cause the greatest pain. By blocking them out, the person is able to protect themselves from everything. It probably happens after that person has had to endure a horrible experience in their life or something.

They can be, it is called shutting the rest of the world out. If you feel like your whole life you have been here for other people to walk on you, you may give up people in general. If you are so angry for everything that has hurt you, you can become numb. You don't feel any remorse for anything you do to others because in your mind you are getting even for those who did hurt you. Unfortunately by doing so all you do is continue that pattern for other people. This is sad.

yeah sociopath psychopaths serial killers and you can find them in correctional faculties and asylums for the criminally insane or you watch movies about them and sometimes they even get to run nations and thats just good wholesome family entertainment. Sure Adolf Hitler ,Pol Pot,History is full of em and it seems to be a desirable trait for leaders to be able to kill without thought or sorrow and go to sleep at night. We are out there!

people can be avoidant of others its not that they dont want love, friendship its that theyve had negative experiences in the past
this leads them to say to themselves that they dont need companionship and see any movement away from this as a personal weakness

You need to talk to a professional, these are dangerous feelings to have. Almost everyone wants to be loved by someone.
