In my ignorance I thought I could just top off the a/c with R134, not realizing it was and R-12 system (yes I know, stupid). So in the process it seems as though I drained all the R-12 out but of course none of the R134 went in. Needless to say it no longer worked after that. I then did some research on converting the system myself, and bought a kit at Wal-Mart. I didn't think I'd need to take it to a shop to have any R-12 drained, so I just tried it. Another mistake I made is that I didn't take out the valve stem on the low end when I was trying to pump the R134 in. So I took it out and screwed on the 134 adaptor again, tried pumpin some more 134, to no avail.

I'm hoping this makes sense. Any ideas?

If you drained all the old R-12 out, you`ve now probably got air in your system, also,You dont have to remove the valve stem on the R-12 low end screw-on fitting. Go to auto parts store and buy R-12 to 134-a adapter, should cost around 4 bucks. You will have to pull a vacuum on your system, then install new 134-a requirements. It`s really pretty simple to do, but borrowing the portable vacuum is the hard part. If you can`t pull a vacuum, take it to a service mechanic and tell him what you done.

Since you have already committed several Federal violations for recovery of the R-12 and have escaped incarceration thus far, you should take it to a recommended shop that can install the kit properly and fill you up with R-134. Otherwise you might do something that will bugger up the compressor and or try to install a can on the high compression side and have it blow up in your hand.

A good man knows his limitations.

Good Luck!

is the compressor running (ingauging) Sometimes you have to hot wire the low pressure switch to get it running to take the 134
