"Somehow" beat the surrounding armies? The US has funded the Israeli army so that they could have an Alli in the middle east. Did you ever ask yourself why Jews were not welcome anywhere? think about that.
Allergic to morning, you are biased.

Jewish tradition holds that the Land of Israel has been a Jewish Holy Land and Promised land for four thousand years, since the time of the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob). The land of Israel holds a special place in Jewish religious obligations, encompassing Judaism's most important sites (such as the remains of the First and Second Temples of the Jewish People). Connected with these two versions of the temple are religiously significant rites which stand as the origin for many aspects of modern Judaism.[16] Starting around the eleventh century BCE, the first of a series of Jewish kingdoms and states established intermittent rule over the region that lasted more than a millennium.[17]
Under Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and (briefly) Sassanian rule, Jewish presence in the region dwindled because of mass expulsions. In particular, the failure of the Bar Kokhba's revolt against the Roman Empire in 132 CE resulted in a large-scale expulsion of Jews. It was during this time that the Romans gave the name Syria Palaestina to the geographic area, in an attempt to erase Jewish ties to the land.[18] Nevertheless, the Jewish presence in Palestine remained constant. The main Jewish population shifted from the Judea region to the Galilee. The Mishnah and Jerusalem Talmud, two of Judaism's most important religious texts, were composed in the region during this period. The land was conquered from the Byzantine Empire in 638 CE during the initial Muslim conquests. The Hebrew niqqud was invented in Tiberias during this time. The area was ruled by the Omayyads, then by the Abbasids, Crusaders, the Kharezmians and Mongols, before becoming part of the empire of the Mamluks (1260–1516) and the Ottoman Empire in 1517.

This isn't an issue between the UK and Palestine, or even the UN and Palestine. The Israel/Palestine conflict has been on going since the days of Joshua and Moses. I do believe that the Jews have an equal right to the land, just as much as the Palestinians do. The Jews were simply persecuted and forced out of Jordan/Mediterranean strip shortly after Jesus' death. There has always been a remnant that desired to reestablish a Jewish nation of Israel, but they didn't have an open opportunity or even widespread willingness until after WWI. The British did assist in this process since they controlled the "mandate of Palestine" by League of Nations decree. Nevertheless, the true fighting over territory didn't begin until after WWII. To consider Israel to be formed at the expense of Palestine is somewhat of an overstatement since Palestine re-took Israeli lands after the diaspora.
I think it is ridiculous to repay people for lands since this has happened since the beginning of mankind. Populations move, empires expand, its all part of life. If the defending country can't fend of the invaders, the land should rightfully be controlled by the invaders. Though recently this has changed with the UN and the end of the imperial ages, I think that all invasions before WWII should simply be considered "write-offs".
I take it you're Canadian like myself when you say we paid the "Indians" for our "theft". I think its crazy. The treaties haven't helped the Aboriginals, but hurt them. I hate to be stereotypical since I have several native friends, but in all honesty they've generally become a lazy people that are known for little more than alcohol, drug dealing, and rave parties. But, I don't blame them, I blame our government. If everyone in Canada or America knew they would get a check in the mail every month and live in their homes for next to nothing, we would be just like the majority of natives.

All the answers are really great, raising very valid points.
I'd just like to add one thing; I don't think a lot of people like this point but I'll say it anyway:
One reason why Jews MUST have Israel is because history has taught us they've never been safe anywhere else! I don't believe in harping on about past wrongs against the Jewish people but fact is fact. The Jews were persecuted and murdered in their millions in Germany; Poland and Austria were terrible also. Every Muslim nation, bar Iran, expelled their Jewish communities en masse. Britain also expelled them, though of course there are Jews in the UK now.
The very history of the Jews is that of a vulnerable, insecure people who could never truly settle anywhere for good; which is why Israel is such an amazing place.
And as most people have rightly pointed out here, the Palestinians were not denied their land by the Jews. It was the surrounding Arab nations that demanded they leave after the partition was established, so that the Arab countries could return and purge the area of all Jews. This was, of course, the 1948 War Of Independence, in which Israel fought for her existence. And somehow beat the invading Arab armies.

WHAT???? The Indians were paid for North America?
I cannot say what UK should do, I live in North America.
But if they want to do to them and give them blankets laced with small pox and diseases for which they had no cure.
Until they die off from millions of people down to a few hundred. force them into reservations with out any way to make a living or feed their familys. Oh, that's right that is what they are doing to help.

$25.00 worth of beads for Manhattan?
You call that quid pro quo?
Israel has always been inhabited by Israelis; just ruled by different dynasties until after WWI, when the British obtained the lands by treaty.
As stated above, post-WWII, the UN partitioned the lands for Arabs and Israeli habitation.
However, the Arabs have proven themselves to be bad neighbors.
With your reasoning, we should give up the lands we "paid" for from the Indians under our "Manifest Destiny" doctrine, and US citizens would then be the illegal immigrants on Indian land seeking amnesty.
'Nuff said!

as per usual, the neocons have this one wrong.
the UK didn't "give" israel back, the united nations created a partition.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947_UN_Partition_Plan
so your question really becomes irrelevant. both states /were/ created.

Well, the Israelis don't use suicide bombings and hiding behind civilians to achieve their goals. Palestinians on the other hand. Israelis gave back the Gaza strip with the promise of peace. That never happened
