We currently have a male betta. We just got a bigger aquarium, and would like to get another fish. What kind of fish would survive well with a betta? Is there any kind of fish we should avoid?

Avoid anything large enough to eat him, that's aggressive, that resembles another betta (long flowing fins, like a male guppy), and that will nip fins of other fish (tetras and barbs will do this if not kept in large enough schools).

Some good choices would be something that occupies the bottom level of the tank, since the betta spends most of their time near the top. Two very good cohoices for this are corydoras catfish and kuhli loaches. Both should be kept in groups of 3+ themselves, though. They've also been kept with African dwarf frogs and snails (a nerite snail is a good one here).

Most fish with long fins that may look remotely similar to Bettas should NOT be kept with Bettas. That will lead to fighting. Neon Tetras (7+) and Corries (Corydas Catfish)(3) would be good for a 10 gallon tank. Avoid any hyper or nippy fish that would destroy the Betta's fins or make it too nervous (stay away from Danios because they are hyper and avoid Barbs because they are aggressive). Some small freshwater shrimp like Ghost Shrimp would also look cool! Good luck!

Betta's are only aggressive towards there own species and will usually coexist with many types of community fish.

Choose Betta as a fish on the first box to get other fish compatible with it.

You have to be carefully what you add with a betta. Dont listen to some people on here because they dont know what there talking about,: I currently have in with my betta, platies, mollies, pleco, corys.

Dont add Anytype of barb there nippy and will shred his fins, I also had neon tetra in with my betta and during this type his fins got nipped/riped i dont know if they are to blame but i think they were, Id go for a bottom dwelling fish such as a corydoras or dawf frog. Or platies, swortails

Dont add female bettas as the 4th person suggested, The male will attack the females slowly killing them. (What i mean by dont listen to some people on here)
