Hi spps, you need know, that head lice are grey or brown wingless insects with six legs and grow to size of just 2mm with a lifespan of around 20 days. The female lays 5 or 6 eggs each day which are attached to the hair near the beginning of the follicle. These yellow or white eggs are referred to as nits and take around 8 days to hatch. They may sometimes be mistaken for dandruff, however nits stick like glue to the hair and prove very hard to remove.

The most effective treatment is a combination of Tea Tree Oil, Citronella Oil, lavender Oil and Neem Oil.You need mix this oils(20 drops each) + baby oil or any other mineral oils(over 75ml) with your regular shampoo. Then apply this solution and cover children head tightly with a plastic bag for half an hour and then rinse it off. This can be used as a remedy to fight off these invaders.

Treatment needed to repeat through 7-10 days.
Head lice treatment have some difficulty penetrating the head lice eggs which can hatch generally a week to ten days after the first treatment. A second treatment usually kills all the freshly hatched head lice. Don't be upset, many times a second head lice treatment is necessary.

Tea tree oil is said to be helpful for a lice remedy. You can find it usually in the organic section of a grocery store or a vitamin shoppe. You will still need to go through eat strand with an extremely fine tooth comb to make sure you get each knit.

Vaseline or mayonnaise will smother the lice (but you have to wash your hair three or four times to get all the oil out afterwards). A mix of tea tree oil and olive oil will also do the trick.

And, seconding the response about the blow-dryer. The heat will definitely kill them.

The old fashioned remedy, and it works very well, is to shave the head (and launder pillows, hats and laundry in general). Boil all combs and brushes. Head lice will only live on the head. Once the hair is gone, so are the nits.

Tea tree oil definately works. We tried EVERYTHING including cutting her hair short. But I was still combing live bugs from my daughter's hair. Tea tree oil worked. Dead bugs were literally falling out of her hair. One treatment and the nightmare was finally over. Most drug stores carry tea tree, as well as a lot of grocery stores, and health food stores. Apply to hair starting at scalp, wrap head in towel for ten minutes, rinse and use nit comb afterwards.

I would try a shampoo that contains lemongrass or cypress oil. Both are insecticides. Some specific recommendations would be Lush Handmade Cosmetics Karma Komba solid shampoo (found at http://usa.lush.com/cgi-bin/lushdb/2008 ), which is also a detangler, or Bath and Body Works Lemongrass Shampoo (http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/sm-lemongrass-shampoo--pi-2365258.html ). Good luck!
