I think you are thinking about the rumor that Lincoln was illegtimate and his "supposed" reasoning for caring for and freeing the blacks. Please see the following sources to include the following:
The Lincoln No One Knows: The Mysterious Man Who Ran the Civil War by Webb B. Garrison.
Forced Into Glory: Abraham Lincoln's White Dream by Lerone Bennett .
God Bless The Southern People.

Abraham Lincoln will always be known as one of those people who proves the saying that "it's what you do and say that counts" primarily because history furnishes comparatively little verifiable information about his family background.
An article on the "Genealogy Today" website, entitled "A Challenge to Abraham Lincoln's Ancestry" argues that Lincoln was the illegitimate son of Nancy Hanks and a North Carolina businessman, Abraham Enloe, who arranged a marriage between Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. Of course, the possible shame covered here is the stain of illegitimacy. Lincoln, himself, admitted that his mother was illegitimate.

Abraham Lincoln's paternal ancestry (if Thomas Lincoln was indeed his father) can be traced back to a Samuel Lincoln, a weaver's apprentice from Hingham, England, who immigrated to Hingham, Massachusetts in 1637.

In other words, as far as historians can verify, Lincoln was of European descent, but they can't trace his family history back very far.

Of course, the only reasonable answer here, is that eluded to by Bunnie and Anthony: If history tells us anything about this man, it is that he was tormented by the tasks that, as a human being, he had to perform, as the leader of this torn Nation: His color, genetic composition, and gender have nothing to do with the proposition that He was the right person for the trying time.
Science and reasonable people can easily arrive at a conclusion that(with rare exception) there remains no "pure" or unique human gene pool remaining on the planet: We have been "mixing it up" for ions and will continue to do so as we socialize and travel: There are no distinct differences, of any significance, in our genetic make up, that make us different from each other: We are far more similar than different: Even Identical twins, as they age, are no longer identical and incure a change in 1 % of their genonme, as they reach adulthood.
Thank You Bunnie and Anthony, for putting it out there.

During Lincoln's time in office he was the subject of hate-motivated propaganda by Copper Heads and Southern sympathizers. Being a fairly unattractive man even by 19th century standards it was easy to accuse him of some kind of dark background. General McClellan said Lincoln resembled an ape.
But there are countless biographies of Lincoln which state his family origins. General McClellan not withstanding Lincoln was all white.

Heck no, I agree with Starr. Whoever told you that was pulling your leg. Did Abe Lincoln look half black? No. Was he half black? No.

Don't you think that if we had a president who was half black, someone would have said something about it before now? As interesting as it may seem, it's not true.
