Fire ants are a big problem year round here in Florida. The best thing I have ever found and highly recommend is made by Bayer for fire ants and come in a pretty blue plastic bottle and sold in most stores

Well it just depends on the situation. You could use amdro but that is just for fire ants. They do make amdro antblock which kills 13 different species of ants that are more typical to be around the household. But as for the best that I would reccomend it would have to be orthene. It smells pretty bad but you put only two teaspoons on the mound and it actually kills them instead of just a bait or you can put like an ounce in 3 gallons of water and drench the mound. Also another that might not be so bad is award or "logic" same thing, is good also but the best for fireants at least is that orthene.

I have used the Spectracide granules that you sprinkle on the top of the mound. They are supposed to take the food to the queen and once she dies, the rest of them will as well. The fellow that mentioned orthine could be right, I use that in my garden, but never for fire ants, but it makes sense because it will really kill bugs I just dont know how that will kill the queen. That is the key, if you dont get the queen she keeps laying eggs and you are still going to have ants. Try Spectracide, you can buy it at WalMart or Lowes or Home Depot.

Try cayenne pepper or instant coffee. Natural ways to rid your yard of ants. Sprinkle pepper or coffee in mound. You can use pepper as a deterent by making a line they will not cross into your home.

In a dry environment, put down dry grits. The ants eat the grits, drink something or get wet and then they swell up and explode!! They also drag them into the nest with similar results.
