Because people with big egos and no real talent keep insisting on multi-million dollar salaries.

The basics of a theare are like this:
90% of the time for the first couple of weeks the film plays in the theatre, the theatre makes only about 10% profit at the box office.
The only money the theatre makes is in the concession stand for the first couple of weeks. This money must pay for everything. Including the rental of the movie, maintenance, payroll, bills, adverticing etc.
Now, if the theatre wanted to show let's say a George Lucas film he is extremely demanding and let's no one make any profit. He makes his contracts specific and requests the best possible auditoriums and profits that there could be.
I know it seems expensive but they are just trying to stay in business especially since the DVD gets released around the same time now.
And please, do not complain to the theatre personnel about the prices, they have absolutely no control over this!!! Thanks.

To offset the ridiculous expenses it takes to produce a movie. Some movies cost in the millions to make.

Do you mean going or making?
If you mean going, then you haven't compared to similar entertainments like live theater shows, ice shows, 6 Flags Over ... You also haven't looked at going at cheaper times instead of the heart of the evening which is highest.
If you mean making, then it comes down to having to assemble a lot of people in one place so everyone can do their job and any delay means that everyone is getting paid to do nothing. This is (part of) the reason that there is one person per lighting instrument, sound device, fog machine, etc., because if people are running from machine to machine everyone else is waiting. That means more planning to have everything in place which means even more people being paid. And often it has to be squeezed into a limited time because of rental of facilities, actors, directors, cinematographers and even cameras working other films. Thus: do everything to get everything in place, which means spending money.

The cost of a movie ticket has nothing whatsoever to do with the cost of making a movie. If that were the case, Spiderman tickets would cost $40 and "Sicko" tickets would cost $3. Theaters and studios are 2 separate entities. Theaters charge what the market will bare.

It is very ridiculous. It's probably because movies are such a popular form of entertainment, and they're running out of origional ideas for movies, so they wanna get their money now before people stop buying movies. (Don't know if that'll ever happen, they'll just keep making stupid films and needless sequels.) Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge movie fanatic, but It makes me sad to see so few good movies coming out these days.

thanks. i think its expensive because we love to watch movie.but this is not correct its expensive because for making a film u need huge back up like u need director, musician, graphic expert, coreographar, stunman, lyric man, singer, actoc, actress, prodution manager, camera, makeup man etcetc.so all of the u need to pay.again sometimes for movie u need to make stage or anything like robbat or car or like which will use in the film.thats why a making films mean a big thing so it is very expensive.when a movie is finished at the end they showing credits just follow that and can that time you can see how difficult to make a film and why it is costly.again u have to pay actor and actress.

To break it down would take too long...but to make a long story short
1.Paying the lead actors
2.location fees
3.props,cars,trucks,F/X etc
4.production fees
5.advertising
6.musical score
7.catering
watch the end credits of a movie...that is what they spend all the money on.
