When I was a kid I did and yes, I got something back....an autographed picture.

Yes. Wrote to Katharine Mc Phee and her mom Peisha during Kat's competition on American Idol. I send her father Dan a Nature sound tape I created for relaxation.
Kat sent me a personal autographed photo of herself mid way through her competition. Caught the McPheever and there aint no cure!

I've written to quite a few and I've gotten responses from some!
One of my best experiences:
I used to belong to a fan club for a band/artist that I really quite enjoy (Siouxsie Sioux) and I posted on their fan board a lot... almost daily there for awhile. The board had posted that the band read the responses but I didn't think much of it.
I went to see them a couple years later when they finally came back to England and went to the meet & greet for an autograph and she knew who I was after mentioning I was in her fan club (and telling her my SN). She actually stopped what she was doing to talk to me for a few minutes, gave me and my wife at the time a pantload of free stuff as well.
I was highly flattered!

When I was a little kid, I sent a letter to The Hudson Brothers. Anyone remember them? They had a tv show and the brothers were Brett,Mark and Bill. Bill Hudson is Kate Hudsons father. They used to sing songs and do silly skits. They had a hit song called, "so you are a star". It was a teeny bopper thing..lol..I never heard back from them though.

Oh it was someone you've never heard of ... he's a very minor TV actor, only moderately talented, and I think his career is pretty much over now.

Well, I didn't but my old friend did.
She wrote to Harry, off Harry Potter.
He sent her a full body poster and he signed it..
It was pretty cool.

I once sent fan mail to a journalist who I sort of knew through a mutual acquaintance. He emailed me back and was thrilled to hear from me and asked me to contact him again.
I was really surprised he answered me!

When I was little I sent a letter to the power rangers asking them to come to my birthday party.....they never wrote back or showed up.....now I hate the power rangers
