I'm still in highschool but i've decided that when i get to college i'm going to major in digital art, which is computer animation. Do I need to prepare a portifolio in order to be accepted into the art school, or do they accept all students who apply? Also, if i do need to prepare a portifolio, what needs to be in it? I've done some portraits of people before.

I was thinking about ASU (Arizona State University) or NAU (Northern Arizona University)

For those schools, you will be admitted on your basic application requirements--test scores, recommendation, etc. As a freshman you will be taking a lot of the basic college classes and maybe one or two art classes. The further along you go the more art classes you will be able to take.

I think you are smart to get your art training at a state school. Often they have excellent facilities and well trained professors. You are saving yourself a lot of money! Your career out of college will go more by your portfolio and the college career center can help you with internships and jobs and the art teachers can help you with your portfolio.

Good luck

It always depends on the school. At University of Cincinnati, their digital design students are accepted because of high grades and standardized test scores, with no consideration of portfolio work at all. But, other schools might be different.

Most art schools don't want people who have established portfolios, because they want to be the one to teach you how to do things. They would rather have students without an established style, because those students are more moldable.

The best you can do is get good grades and take a lot of art classes while in High School, and get high standardized test scores.

Savannah School of Art and Design (SCAD) has a state-of-the-art facility. You should look into it, too. My BFF went there to get her Masters in Historic Preservation.
