ting down I used carb cleaner did not seem to help. any ideas

Occasionally the phenolic resin carburetor float valve in the old quadrajet carbs become heavy raising the gas level in the float chamber. A genuine GM carb overhaul kit will bring it back into perfect shape. These carbs are extremely easy to overhaul and the satisfaction of doing it yourself will make your chest so big you won't be able to get in your truck. In the meantime check your timing and timing chain for looseness. Be sure you have a MSD cap rotor and wires an a new set of plugs in your truck. Don't buy bargain basement ignition wires when running a good GM electronic ignition.

1989 is it a carb are throttle body
