Beer and a beer fridge, that's all I needed in mine! LOL

Putter and putting cup. Great way to burn off stress.

Half a dozen water pistols. He and his dorm mates can fill 'em up and have a water pistol fight. Very childish activity but you'd be surprised what is fun in college.

If he has a voyeuristic bent, how about binoculars or a stethoscope?

Careful cuz some colleges wont let you put up a dart board or run your toaster.

I doubt you can afford a counter-height fridge, but you might want to see if you could give your parents money toward one, so it's a family gift.

Sheets!!! Comfortable sheets are a must. So is a good pillow. If you can find a back pillow (the kind you can read in bed with while sitting up in bed!), those are great for those "late nighters!"

Rolls of quarters for doing laundry come in handy -- especially for the vending machines, too!!!

My husband said HEADPHONES!!! for privacy (yours and your roommate's!!!

Flip flops for the shower, a gift card for gas or groceries or fast food resturants, towels, an umbrella or raincoat, all would make great gifts for a college freshman.

popcorn popper.

Funnel attached to two large loops of surgical tubing and some water balloons.

Pennys:

Push in on someone's door on the bottom as hard as you can, and cram pennys in there, and they won't be able to open it.

Shaving cream . . . . .
some extra sense of humor in case you loose your sense of decency.

If you don't have a lot of money I would say 12 pack of ramen. When he is broke and hungry he will thank you.
