Did you mean guppies?
I doubt that your hardness or pH were the problem. I've raised guppies where the pH was 8.3 and the alkalinity was close to 300 right out of the faucet. Guppies are actually a brackish fish and are adapted to living in these types of conditions. They can even be acclimated to full saltwater conditions where the pH and hardness are even higher than what you probably have.
You might want to try adding some salt to your water to see if that helps. About a tablespoon per every 5 gallons of tank water is enough, and other tropical fish can live in that amount as well. And if you're using bottled water, it should be deionized, spring, or reverse osmosis water, not distilled, but these aren't even necessary if you choose your fish well.
Also, are all the fish you've had from the same store? It;s possible they've picked up a parasite and have all died from the same cause. I'd try a different store the next time and see if that makes a difference.
Some other fish you might want to consider trying are platys, swordtails, or molloies - they all like the hard, high pH water, so again, there's no reason to adjust your water.

Try A goldfish, guppies, mollies, or pleco catfish.
If they can survive 5mounths+ in your tank, it could be the wate your using, or something else. Those fish are hardy. If they survive, and the others dont, thats telling you something. If they die, it could be the food, or the way you rdoing your aquarium.
Look online for more possibilities.
Hope it works out!

Buy a book! Read the book! The simple guide to Freshwater AQUARIUMS By David E Boruchowitz .... it would help you much. Bottled water is full of bacteria and lacking in air...try different fish after you get a book and read up on it.

use dotted mollys they are easy to take care of and don't use bottled water (no need) at the store (petco or petsmart) buy watersafe tablets be Jungie and another in that section that is a stress reliever and fights hard water and the metals in it and your fish will be fine.
- good luck!
