Somehow my curseor has decided to become a full letter wide rather than a skinny veritcal line. I tried the settings in the mouse configuration, but that doesn't help.

Try using a System Restore point cuz you tried what I thought should fix it. To get to System Restore Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore. Restore to an earlier date , choose a date before the cursor changed.

You may need to fetch yourself a different cursor! Under Start and Settings and Control Panel and Mouse and Pointers you'll find settings for all the cursors!
Now that I've told you, I bet you'll have fun!
For each cursor, if you don't care for the default set available, one folder in which you can browse is My Computer at c:\Windows\cursors\
If yer nerdish as I am, you may someday set up a folder of your own somewhere with a collection of cursors you find elsewhere...or draw on your own
