the moon is waxing when the light arc is on the right. the moon orbits in a prograde rotation (counter clock wise) therefore the sunlight that reflects off the moon moves from right to left.

think about it this way. say the darker areas are covered in hair. so you're waxing away! the lighter areas have been waxed. you keep waxing more until you get the full moon. then the hair starts to grow back which is the time when the moon is waning.

The moon is waxing when it looks like p and it is waining when it looks like a.
In other words: The cutting line is on the left side on a waxing moon.
The cutting line is on the right side on a waining moon.

After a new moon,
the Right side is the fiRst to show;
the Left side is the Last to show.

So Right side = waxing; Left side = waning.

I always look and see if the full is "holding" water or "dumping" water. Holding water is waxing and dumping water. Imagine the curve of the moon towards the top would hold water and curved portion pointing down would be dumping water.
