Every game I watch on television the first baseman gets thrown a new baseball after the end of each inning from somebody in the dugout. I don't know who throws it to him or what he does with it. Can anyone out there tell me?

Its more of a tradition then anything else. Since the first basemen warms up the infield between innings he gets a ball thrown to him. Baseball Folklore has it that back in the day first basemen weren’t the smartest of men, so they would toss them a ball ahead of time, so they didn’t forget to bring one out.

The first baseman is the least mobile of all players. He is lazy and in his own world. There is a guy designated on the bench who is suppose to throw stuff at him to make sure he stays awake. Usually it's a baseball because there are alot of them around. Then like clock work the first baseman acts like he is awake and proves this by throwing the ball to his fellow infielders. But he is so weak that most of the throws end up rolling across the ground like little ground balls. It's pretty pathetic but at least the other players get a little practice and get warmed up before each inning. First basemen are so lazy!

some one from the bench, most likely a bat boy, throws the first baseman a ball so that the first baseman doesnt have to go search for one before the next inning and holds up the game and the infielders from warming up

tradition and to keep the mit in place for the throws.
usually a bench player or coach tosses it to the FBman on the return.

Same thing after an infield out, the third baseman must throw the ball to the pitcher. Superstition.

The only notable lefties that I can think of are pitchers or first basemen. I have heard of a few catchers who caught lefty, but I can't recall any other positions. Considering how long baseball has been around, there must have been other position players that were left handed, but I don't think there was anyone who was amazing. Sorry!

Someone on the bench throws it to him so he can warm up the infield the next inning.
