I have heard that even if a cup of water was spilt on the keyboard nothing serious would happen!

is it true?

No.
It will usually not be bothered by a couple of drops of water...but it is not water resistant.
It has a thin plate in between the keyboard and the system board (motherboard) that can with stand some water. The idea of the plate, is that the water will dry on the plate before it reaches the system board. Which will work for about a teaspoon of water. Anymore than a teaspoon, and the water will run into the system board before it evaporates.

Panasonic makes a true water resistant laptop...but it cost quite a lot.
