I'm taking an online class and one of our discussion questions was about whether or not we agreed the the police in Florida handcuffing a 5 year old that was acting up in class. I was just wondering what everyone else's opinion on it was. Some opinions that have been expressed have been very..unusual. Here's the link for the video

it's a tough call.

if you have a situation where the school is being controlled by one badly behaved kid, who can't legally be stopped, then something needs to be done - the job of the school is to educate children, not control the worst behaved children.

then again, kids who behave like this simply shouldn't be allowed in school until they learn to follow the rules of the school.

but clearly treating the child as a criminal won't solve anything either.

by the way, i don't this video should be widely available for anyone to view and if i were that child's parents i'd sue the st. pete times for a violation of basic communications law.

the st. pete times is a for profit organization and this video was used for profitable purposes without the expressed consent of the girl's family.

The handcuffing was excessive, but that child was out of control and appears to need help. From reading the accompanying article, the lawyer's comments are sickening. Claiming the assistant principal "provoked" the child? Please. And the mother complaining? If she would have disciplined her daughter properly, the child wouldn't be climbing on furniture and swinging at an adult. She should be ashamed of herself as a parent, not trying to blame it on the school.

it is very obvious the child in emotionally disturbed.the teachers and school show great patience in dealing with the little girl. i watched the complete video and never saw any arrest being made.they even stated they told the mom what they were doing.society would automatically assume the child was too young amd most are.i am a retired deputy in texas. i had a 5 year old boy pull a gun and shoot at me.i was shocked and just froze and the little boy ran off.the reason i know his age is that i saw him again a few days later and stopped him. i cuffed him knowing what he was capable of and what he had done. i was able to find his mom.she was shocked at what i told her.she did not believe me until we took the gun out of his jacket.the scene on the video only shows the officer cuffing the little girl until her mom arrived. there was no arrest at any time.the girl had done significare damage to the office and this would insure that nothing else was done until her mom arrived

The problem is, police are big on procedure, and procedure calls for handcuffing anybody that has been called into question for being violent, even a 5 year old.

I personally think that is one of the dumbest things to do...but is it legal, probably yes.

Maybe if more parents were doing their job of discipline their kids rather then letting them run rampant this would never have happened.

Years ago parents would bring their kids to the police station to be reprimanded. It scared the Dickens out of them. They behaved quite well after that. Nowadays, if you even look at your kid wrong you can have CPS knocking at your door.

The police did the right thing. If my kid behaved like that, hitting a teacher over and over I would tell my child that he got what he deserved, and then he would get it from me when we got home (and that doesn't mean a beating). But that's probably why I have a kid that doesn't behave like that.

It was wrong. Handcuffing a 5-year old is traumatizing for her and just sick. The teacher shouldn't have called the cops.

this is exactly what happends when kids arent disciplined young, if you want to blame anyone blame the faulty system that kept saying kids arent alowed to be spanked or restrained, and yes i absolutely agree she should have been handcuffed.

She was combative, and could of harmed anyone within reach. A swift kick to the gonads, even from a 5 year old, HURTS.

I would of cuffed her *** too.
