for like $20 at Joann Fabrics you can get a complete tuneup. Worth the money in my book!

My mother used to have a Pfaff that was notorious for that. When ever my Dad and later me fixed it, it was almost always the tension on the thread coming off the spool on top of the machine.

Has it always been like that? If not, something has changed. You say the bobbin tension is a bit off. I don't know what that means to you but as I said above the tension is invariably the reason for this sort of problem.

The first answer offering a $20 tune up would probably be money well spent. White is considered a good brand as far as I am concerned. At least it is worth spending a few dollars before you trash it and buy another sewing machine.

Good luck. And you are correct a problem like that is enough to make a preacher say bad words.

There are at least two simple things to check before worrying about tensions and repair places.

1. When you first begin to sew, are you being careful to bring the tail of the top thread up through the fabric, and then to *hold it out of the way of the needle*? If not, the needle can easily pull the tail down into the bobbin... the machine will jam at that point, and you'll have to rock the wheel to get the fabric loose enough to cut the threads and begin again. That used to happen to me all the time before I realized that tail was trouble if I didn't watch it.

2. Make sure the top thread is, and stays, securely inside the eye of that little arm that goes up and down when you're stitching... don't know it's name, but it's one of the first places you pass the thread through near the top of the machine before you thread it through the actual needle. Sometimes the thread seems to jump out of that arm (don't know why), and that can make a mess of the threads below too.

Good luck!

Re thread the machine top and bottom. First make sure that the pressure foot is up(the part you lower the lever to start to sew) If it isn't in the up position, the thread will only sit on the tension discs not inbetween them like it is supposed to be.

I don't know what part of the country you live in but a tune up is anywhere from $40-$100 in the Midwest, even at Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Generally speaking, with sewing machines, wherever you are seeing the problem...look in the opposite place.
In other words --if it is jamming on the bottom of the fabric and/or machine, most likely the problem is with the threading of the upper parts and/or the needle.
Try re-threading the top---
good luck, I know how frustrating that can be!

Your top thread is not threaded properly. You could be missing just one little threader to throw the tension off.

take it to a sewing machine repair shop, when you get it back have them show you how to correctly thread it, and dont mess with the tension.
