You have a possible issue with either your DirecTV DVR does not have TWO coaxial cables in the back of it connected to Line 1 and Line 2. Or in the setup software under Sattellite setup it is configured for use of only one tuner. If you do not have TWO coaxial lines coming from DirecTV Dish on your roof you will need another line installed. Usually from the dish the TWO coaxial lines go into a MultiSwitch, I have had one DirecTV multiswitch start to fail on me in the past. Luckily I had a 4x8 multiswitch and was able to disconnect the cable from the bad output of the multiswitch onto one of the empty cable connections. Your multiswitch may be a 2x4, 4x6, or 4x8 depending on how many DVR's or Receivers you have in your home.

Once you have confirmed that any of these situations are working/fixed then you should be able to use the LIVE TV button to switch between the TWO tuners. This will allow you to Record Two channels at the same time, or record Two channel and watch a previously recorded show already saved on the DVR, or record one channel and watch another channel.

If you have any further questions or issues please send me an email with more info as far as Which DirecTV DVR you are using, How the Cables/connections are set up, then I will be able to help you out further.. I hope this helps, again please feel free to email me if you need more assistance..

That's because the DVR only has 1 tuner in it. If you want to change the channel, your telling the tuner to switch stations. If it switches stations, the DVR can't record the program it was recording because it can stay tuned in to the channel it needs to.

You need a DVR with two tuners. That way the recorder can record one channel while you watch another. This would also allow the DVR to record two programs at once (provided you weren't trying to watch a third program at the same time.

Make sure you have a DUAL-tuner set-top box. One to record channel A and one to view channel B.
If you have a set-top with a single tuner you can only watch/record a single channel.
