Angelfish are very territorial and will attack smaller fish and possibly eat them if they feel their territory is threatened. If you were to try angels with smaller fish, make sure you have a large tank (at least 20 gal) with a lot of floating plants. However, even with these precautions, angels may still attack.

Oh yeah. Out in the wild, angelfish love to eat little fish like neon tetras and stuff. I have a 3 inch diameter (8 inches high with the fins) angelfish that kills everything else in the tank. They might get along with smaller fish while they're babies, but they grow fast and will eat everything they can. Angelfish are still neat, they just don't play well with others.

For the most part Angelfishes can be real bullies. Being very territorial and aggressive, these fish will particularly fight with species of their own kind and sex, as well as with other related and non-related fishes that are similar in appearance, color, shape, or behavior.

Aquarium Introduction Tips: Extreme dominate or territorial aggression occurs most often when an Angelfish has been established for some in an aquarium and a new tank mate is introduced. If you are going to add an angel to your aquarium community, it is suggested, unless otherwise noted, that it be introduced into the tank last.

If you already have an established fish community and want to then add an Angelfish, one trick is to remove all the fish present in the aquarium, re-arrange the decor if possible, then place the all fish back into the tank along with the new Angelfish.

When decided to keep multiple Angelfishes in the same aquarium it is best to choose mated pairs, angel species that commune well together, or pick dissimilar species, and then introduce them into the tank all at the same time.

Other Key Factors For Success: By providing Angelfishes with ample room to move around and shelter to hide in it allows them to better keep away from other fishes, as well as establish a more spacious territory of their own. This all helps to lessen the effects of territorial disputes with other tankmates. Of course as true with most all marine fishes, there are no guarantees that fights or conflicts of some kind won't occur, especially taking into consideration the aggressive nature of Angelfishes.

Angelfish are members of the cichlid family. Although they may get along with smaller fish when they are younger, they grow to be about 6" and will eat smaller fish (guppies, neons) by the time they mature. Also when they begin to mature, they'll establish "their" territory and bully any other fish in the tank that enters it.

Because of their adult size, you shouldn't try to keep angels in tanks that are under 30 gallons, and they should only be kept with fish that are too big for them to eat, and can stand up to their temperment.

BTW, if you look at the website posted in the answer above mine, you'll see that it refers to saltwater angelfish, not freshwater. The saltaquarium.about.com URL sort of gives it away. :-)
