Well I would personally go with 6600GT but they both suck no offense.

Get a difference choice entirely.

If you're into nVidia then the FX5500 card is very out dated if you're into playing modern games but the VideoRAM is good.
6600GT is a good video card but 128MB of VRAM is very slow and you won't to able to play a lot of modern games.
Or be able run Vista to the fullest on either of those.

Get a nVidia/ATI card with 256MB of VRAM at least, that's a standard.

Now what are you going to be doing with this video card?

Oh it's a video/graphics card, VGA isn't ... yeah.

6600GT is the newer, faster card and a better choice, even with only 128mb. But neither are great- what kind of video slot do you have- AGP?

Good question. You need to learn what games that you want to play on it. You need to check to see if it is Windows Vista compatible or not. Do you need DirectX 9 or DirectX 10.

More RAM is better.

Both cards are DirectX 9, so you might be missing the FUTURE with DirectX 10 and Windows Vista.

It's all about specification. But also check your power supply to see if it has enough. Some video cards will say "400 Watts or more".

You see, video cards are not developed UPWARD, there are many branches. So if you go one way, you miss the other path and the games that use that different technology. So look at all of the games that you like and see what video card that they recommend.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
