Nowadays the worst job seems to be street cleaning or toilet cleaning but is there anything worse than that?

Years ago I had moved to Richmond, Virginia with some friends. We needed some money so we went to one of these "temporary work" places. We ended up getting sent to a lead smelting company.

What this company did was to take the lead plates out of used car batteries and then melt the lead back into lead ingots. They had a machine that chopped the tops off of the batteries -- but apparently the machine had been broken for a year.

So -- the idea was that you'd unscrew the caps off the batteries, drain out the acid & water, place the battery on a metal stand, then smash off the top with an axe, and then dump the lead plates into barrels.

They gave us raingear to wear, but the temp was in the 90s, and it we were all cooking to death. So we worked without raingear, wearing only rubber gloves.

After a couple of hours, I started to get sick from the fumes. So I left and took the bus home. By the time I got home, I had these little holes all over my jeans and tshirt from the acid water. The other guys stayed the whole day. When they got home one guy tore off his shirt and pants like they were made of tissue paper. The acid had destroyed his clothes; I don't know how he made it home without his clothes falling off. Another guy had just purchased a nice pair of leather work boots, and he could scrape acid-dissolved leather off of his nice boots with his fingernail.

So for a couple bucks an hour we each lost a pair of shoes, pants, and shirt, ruined by acid. God knows what else it did to us physically.

I once worked with Merry Maids in Southern California. What a kick in the butt. Cleaning toilets of the 'rich & famous' is not much fun.
A tie would have to be when I worked at Showbiz Pizza Place (now known as Chuck E. Cheese..) ; being 'Billy Bob Bear' for b-day parties really s*&%ed. The costume was so hot; & I'm not sure who was more rude----demanding parents, or spoiled, mean kids who kicked & tugged & cried & thought it was fun to do all the above.

It's a toss-up between three jobs, for me:

*USAF, my second tour:

**A real idiot for a commander (some Lt. Col).

**Ran the rest of the troops into the ground (LOTS of stress related illnesses, etc.).

**One of the Sgts. and I were the only ones who didn't end up in the hospital (BTW, this was a DESK job outfit ...).

*Teaching independent ed.

**Very inept series of principals (except one), and a really bigoted, petty secretary.

**It was a dumping ground for inept/soon-to-retire administrators and teachers (yeah, I know, I was going to law school at the time, and this was a really kushy assignment ...).

**They all hated my innovations, but the District adopted them within about three years after I went back to classroom teaching.

**The students were a total blast, though.

*My first teaching assignment at my current school (pre-law school):

**Bigoted, inept, lazy teachers in my dept.

**I had NO books, curriculum, room, etc., despite the fact that it was already about a month into the semester when I took over the class (I'd just transferred in from a continuation school).

**They have all, thankfully, retired, and the rest of the staff at my school are now either friendly, uninterested, or stay out of my way.

**The kids are STILL a blast to work with.

(;=]

Air traffic controller is supposed to be one of the most stressful jobs ever. The worst job I ever had was filing purchase orders in an accounts payable department... that was a summer job years ago.

Have you ever seen the people's jobs in the Philippines?
It's horrible! I've seen garbage men who don't wear any gloves and even are so hungry, they eat the people's garbage! And if you've visited where the government live, their houses are so wonderful, while they force their citizens to live in shacks!
