It depends on the OS and programs that you use. If you're running XP it would be enough to use the internet and that's about it. If you have onboard video then there's even less ram available. 1 gig and a video card is ideal for normal computer use. Vista, gaming, multiple application use would require more ram.

if you are using Windoze XP then 765 meg is good i use 512 meg and don't have a problem, but then i don't plat any of the new 3d games that are out, i use my laptop for programming and using office programs, i have a desktop that uses 1.5 gig ram and it don't go any faster, but the more ram you have to better some programs will run.

i myself run 512 mb of ram in both of my computers (my online comp and my gamer/coding/animation computer). both of these computers are running XP. however both of these are single core computers. if you have a dual core and like to do things like virus scan and game simultaneously, or if you want to run games such as oblivion, FEAR, or supreme commander then you should probably at least jump up to 1gb. ram is pretty cheap right now, so your only concern with upgrading would be getting ram which is compatible with your computer
i run things like Halo, Command and Conquer Generals, Warcraft III, Black and White 2, all of the Myst series, Blender (open source 3d animation software), and Dev C++ (an open source C/C++ compiler) and they all run fine on my machine.

it's "enough" but more is always better. if you are a very serious user who has tons of programs open at once, or very big ones, or games, (3d games), then you'll always want more. but if the rest of your system is crap, more ram wont' help anything, as you'll have bottlenecks elsewhere.

Depends what you intend to do on your computer. If you are not going to do much, it should be ok, but if you plan to play games or do a lot at once then it may be a problem

Yeah, I suppose if you aren't planning to edit major movies and everything. I've got 512mb and it works more or less fine, although today most computers should offer you at least 1gig (1000mb)
