Jem and Scout are playing a usual game rolling each other around the neighborhood in a tire. Scout insists on going first. A little annoyed at having to go second, Jem gives the tire an extra hard push sending into Boo Radley's property. When she realizes where she is, Scout gets frightened and the two run.

I seem to remember, I read the book more than once, but it was a long time ago, that Dill was involved too. All of the kids run out of fear. The thing is, they have no experience with Boo, so they really have no concrete reason to fear him. This shows up Atticus's saying that you have to walk around in somebody else's shoes to really know him. It is also a bit of a statement on the attitude of white people in Maycomb toward black people. The whites fear the blacks mainly because they don't know anything really about them.
