Mostly the blockade.
For one thing Cuba (like India by the British) was pillaged and bankrupted by the fleeing Batista government and mafia. They stole the wealth and took it with them. So Castro was waaaay behind the economic 8-ball to start with. And nobody helped them.
With no aid from their giant wealthy neighbor the USA, but only scorn and blockade, it was pretty hard to get ahead. It was crushing and oppressive and still is.
Otherwise they would have wound up like Puerto Rico and the USA itself, with a large poor class, a small wealthy class and a disappearing middle class..
BTW the Cuban people are more literate than Americans, statistically anyway.

Neither. It's because Castro is a Communist.
Anybody who thinks it's because of the US embargo is a flamingly ignorant 'tard.
The US is ONE COUNTRY. Cuba has the freedom to trade with over 200 other nations. Any economic system that would succeed or fail based on trade with a single nation would have to be crafted by a retarded ape with a cannabis habit and a drinking problem. And any leader who would adopt such a policy would have to be even stupider.

The people don't influence the policies or the national trade (including drugs) and too few people are in control of all the money, there are many people (police included) who take from the community and therefore the community don't benefit from the countries true wealth.

Neither. They're living under a dictatorial regime who keeps all money, food, supplies for themselves and keeps most Cubans living in poverty. Our embargo doesn't help matters, but it is certainly not the cause of poverty in Cuba.

in my opinion the cubans are just hung up on castro and castro is hung up on communism. it's sort of like happiness vs. capitalism. castro is like the grandaddy of cuba although one of his sons handles the politics. a lot of people are afraid of capitalism. it's like with feudalism, with not enough lords and too many serfs. the serfs are the slaves to the lords. the lords live in castles and live it up.sheepdog is right 100%.

Have you considered the possibility that Castro may be robbing the people blind in order to support his own extravagant lifestyle? Take your foot out of your mouth and do a little research.

Like most dictators, Castro has taken the wealth of the nation for himself, and leaving his citizens in the lurch

I lost track of how many ignorant respondents said "communism". The fact is, Cuba is not poorer than any of it's capitalist neighbours in the Caribbean.

Because the Cuban government owns everything, and can control the people only if they rely on the Government for everything.
