you can use the google search bar for any conversion like this. Just type in 1 gigabyte to megabytes and it will give you the conversion. It says 1024 megabytes. This also works for just about any units.

1024, its a binary thing

Regardless of weather its in memory or hard drive.

It comes from the basics of binary addition, and is why when you buy a hard drive, you will get less space than they state on the sales info.
