Everytime I am filling out any form online, the system always DEMANDS a zip code and refuses to continue without it. Why is it assumed that all internet users reside in a place where zip codes are used? At first I assumed that that specific product was for residents of the United States only, but I have come to find that every online form I have to fill out is demanding a zip code. Why?

Everywhere you can receive US mail, there is a zip code. That's
because each mail carrier's office has a zip code.

You are correct that this is not true out of the US, though it is
quickly becoming true because it is so much more efficient
a way of routing mail than by textual addresses.

I continue to be surprised that we don't have completely
numeric codes in the US (that is that cover right down to the
suite number).

That is, when a new address comes into being, it gets a new
number with the post office - I'm not saying that everyone would
use that new number (just like not everybody uses the zip code),
but it would be far far more efficient for businesses to communicate
by number than by text.

Well, if you live in the US, you have a zip code. Many programs are written to target people living in the US and a zip code becomes a required piece of information. They are very helpful to people who analyze data. They are also very helpful when trying to ship something.

I do not know exactly how to help you. If you make up a zip code and something is sent to you, it might cause that something to take a lot longer to ship or might even become lost. Lets say you are in Paris and make up a zip code and the item is coming from the US. I can see the item first going to that zip code and then going on to Paris, Texas. The people shipping this stuff do not have time to scrutinize every address. They usually focus on the zip code.

Because it's kind of a tracking thing. They want to know where in the world their product is reaching and where it isn't. The Zip code lets them know.

Like the other person said just make it says you're not a resident of the US and the zip code thing should go away. Either that or find one nearest to the place you live if they're going to be like that.

i guess if your in the US and you are ONLINE then you must be in some location. Zip code is a simplier way to ask where are you from meaning state and city?
