under copyright act 37, litrature or whatever material is copyrighted, must be proved as it belong to the author, little expensive case, so whatever picture you are copying from any web, if only already copyrighted, can persue to case, otherwise, no need, a few cases only make original copyright, otherwise all are fake, you can use them if you believe,
u know if something is copyrighted, you can only use it after written permission from author, or if he deid, after 50 years, you can use it freely. :-)
but again not every picture not every content is copyrighted.
on the web it is also a bias from past years. cuz they said internet is for use of every one. means NO-Copyrighted, its only a theory use it on your own risk. :-)

Copyright is tricky, and not as clear cut a patent which gives exclusive protection against copying. An owner must file and be granted copyright protection. There is also intellectual property rights. In the case of artist, there are copies, and an artist interpretation. If someone were to copy a painting in detail and try to sell it as the original, especially a valuable painting, then it would be fraud, not a copyright violation. When vendors offer pictures of famous characters or paintings, they may have a contracted with the owner to pay a royalty to the owner. On the other hand, if it can be construed as a parity, there is no protection violation. Also copyrights are not all encompassing. For example ACME and AAA as a company name is ubiquitous in almost every line of service industry to get top billing in the Yellow Pages. Perhaps a way to phase your questions may be: Under what circumstances is prior approval required to use, reproduce, or sell renditions of copyrighted material? Best of luck The PracticaL Mentor

If it says Copyright anywhere on the website, then it would not be legal to copy anything. You also have to read the terms of service at the website.
You see, there is plenty of images on-line through many websites. Some are specifically for getting FREE no copyright infringement purposes. Those say right on it.. DOWNLOAD for FREE.
I mean, are you publishing something? Do you intend to copyright these images yourself? or is this just for your personal use?
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Technically, it is really up to whoever has the rights to the image. Some will allow you to use them freely, as long as you 'mention' them. Some, you must pay a fee. Others, want a fee, as well as a 'first lookover' of the finished product before they will allow you to publish it.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

You must obtain the right of use from the copyright owner. This must also be a written authorisation and should state the limitations of use.
