Usually, they do not pick up unless it is in a container. But, some people collect items like this to repair and sell, so just leave it there and it will disappear in a few days. If it is only slightly broken, you can call Habitat for Humanity who will pick it up for free.

Our trashman takes everything. BUT we live in a smaller city with few restrictions on trash pickup. Although, honestly, it is usually someone else who takes our stuff when we set it out for the trash man. Strange, broken things that you would think no one would ever want. Set it out. What is the worst that could happen?

Most areas have "unlimited pick-up" days a couple times a year. You may luck out and someone who repairs furniture will pick it up.
