i've been planting some greens to spruce up a blank space in front of our house. unfortunately, wandering fowl and animals have been eating up the leaves and digging up the soil, thus killing of the new growth. would you guys know how to deal with this?

Chickens can tear up any type growth you plant. Only way I know of is to put up wire fencing to keep them out or contain the fowl.

I live in alaska, and my very good friends have both chickens and a large garden. there is also a problem with bears, moose, etc, getting in and either eating hte chickens or eating the veggies. So, they put up an electric fence. It seems cruel, but usually the animals are not really harmed, just surprised, which is enough to make them leave.
a regular fence could make the area in front of the house seem to heavy, and a light chicken wire fence may break down if a larger animal, such as a deer, decides to get a little munch from your plants. I'd say the electric fence is the best idea. Just make sure to un hook it when small children are around, just in case.

Are these your chickens and are they in a fence and getting out. If so just clip their wing on one side and they cannot fly out of the fence. If they are free ranging poultry the only thing you can do is put up a fence, either a poultry fence or, what is cheaper but a little meaner, an electric fence.

Fitzgerald, Georgia has been dealing with that problem for years. It's known as the chicken town they're everywhere digging up peoples gardens and nesting virtually everyplace.
What I discovered is that if you put Pine Straw down it attracts chickens to scratch it up.
If you leave just the dirt and nothing on top they will not be led to scratch there and it worked in my garden.

Hatchet
flour
fry daddy
oil
seasonings to taste
shovel
Use the hatchet to dispatch the foul fowl.
clean said bird and dip on flour.
fry in oil in fry daddy
bury remains in the garden
Now your garden is productive.
