The best way isn't to take meds.
You need to set the alarm and get up everyday at the same time... Eventually you will fall asleep at night. It make take getting used to.
I've had this problem over the years and what I did when I couldn't sleep was get up for half an hour. I might read, but I find just sitting in the dark or with the tv on mute makes me tired. It also stops my mind from spinning wheels which keeps me awake.
So I get up.
Some people force themselves to stay in bed even if it kills them.
The worst - is wanting to go to sleep and you can't. You keep yourself up trying to get to sleep or just wanting it so bad. So don't do this. Get up and sit for a while.
My first thoughts was the best though.

Try not to spend too much time in your room for things other than sleeping. Your brain needs to associate sleeping with your bedroom. Avoid exercising within 4 hours of going to sleep. Avoid any caffeine within 8 hours of going to sleep. If you find yourself awake after 30 minutes, get up and leave the room for 20 minutes. You can read, watch tv, or do anything that won't stimulate too much thought. You can also try relaxing tapes. There are also physicians that specialize in sleep insomnia. They might give you medicine (if you want it), or have you get a sleep study done to check for sleep apnea or other physical issues keeping you awake.

Do not sleep in a day time. 6 to 8 hours sleep is sufficient. Total 42 to 56 hours sleep in a week. As the age grows the quantity of sleep is reduced. Do not worry for sleep/ quantity of sleep if your total sleeping in a week is in above limit.

I am not advocating alcoholism, but have a drink before bed. It will help calm you down and make you drowsy.
