No more than 3 ounces a day! At that age, the vast majority of their liquid intake should be milk/formula. And it's INCORRECT that a child loses nutrients when they get water! As long as you are giving your child the recommended amount of milk/formula every day, it is completely fine to supplement the liquid intake with water each day. Yes, babies need nourishment, but sometimes they are just THIRSTY and aren't looking for a meal! The 3-ounce rule ensures that you won't get them so full of water that they don't want the milk.

i usually don't give anymore than 3-4oz a couple of times a week but my mum gave me and my brother water everyday, however much we wanted and we are now both really healthy adults and have always been healthy whilst growing up, also iv only been to the doctors three times in all my life (for an illness) so obviously did not harm us!! what these people say about not giving a baby any water as they will lose out on nutrition is absolute rubbish, sometimes babies are just thirsty not hungry and my son has the EXACT same amount of formula on the days when he does and doesn't have a drink of water

No more than 4 oz at a time. My pediatrician says that water is fine to give babies. Even when they have the hiccups - which bothers the parents more than it does the babies- giving them a little water does not hurt anything. Water does not dehydrate then, if anything it helps keep them hydrated, especially when they are not hungry but just want something to replace all of the spit bubbles they produce!

I have a four and a half month old baby and he loves his water he will drink at least 4oz a day more if it is hot weather. My health visitor said this is fine. If your baby has started on solids he will want more water than usual. Babies can get dehydrated so quickly it is important to try and get them to drink water if they are ill or if it is very hot weather.

you shouldn't give a baby under 1 any water if they are nursing just nurse more if not just give them more formula. If you give them water they are losing lots of nutrients they should have during the day. No Water

5 month olds do not need any water. Stick to breastmilk and/or formula.... and possibly stage one solids, if they are ready for it.

Call your baby's doctor and ask. That is the only person you should ask health questions about your child to. The doctor knows the answer.
